Skip Contents not Allowed in a Skip?

You cannot put hazardous or harmful items into a skip.

Some of the items you might not think would be prohibited are: TVs, computer monitors, Tyres, fluorescent tubes, fridges, paint and paint tins (unless empty), and plater-board. Read the full list below:

Can I Put a Mattress in?

Mattresses must be disposed of separately to general waste and so normally cannot be disposed in a skip.

Please check with you skip hire company to check about mattress disposal, they may be able to collect it at the same time as the skip for an extra charge.

Can You Put Paint Tins in?

Yes, you can, but not paint so you need to make sure they are totally clean of the contents.

Why Can´t You Put Plasterboard in?

Legislation covering plasterboard or gypsum waste, states that it must be separated from other general waste so plasterboard cannot be mixed in with waste in a skip.

How Full Can I Fill a Skip?

You cannot pile the skip contents up above the level of the sides. Ensure that the rubbish is level with the container.

Can You Put Soil or Rubble in?

Yes, you can but it is a good idea to advise the skip hire company of this when you order.

Do I Need a Permit?

Not unless you are planning on leaving it on a public road or pavement. If you need to do this, you need a license from the local council.

Normally your skip hire company will organise this for you and add the charge to the cost of your skip.

How Can I Dispose of Electrical Items?

Old electrical items such as fridges, freezers, microwaves, TV or computer monitors telephones must be disposed of separately and cannot be put in a skip.

If you are buying a new electrical item you might want to check if the company, you are purchasing from have a service to take the old item away.

Or talk to your county council about the collection of electrical goods.

What Can I Do With Hazardous Waste?

Items such as asbestos, medical or biological waste, explosives, solvents, oil and chemicals need to be dealt with by a separate company specialising in this area of disposal.
